UW Today: "Tropical sea temperatures influence melting in Antarctica"

New research lead by a joint team of UW and British Arctic Survey researchers indicates that increasing sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific can accelerate glacier melting in Antarctica. According to Steig’s research, unusual westerly winds over the Amundsen Sea that allow warm deep water upwelling are linked to changes in the Tropical Pacific Ocean, and can lead to accelerated melting of outlet glaciers in this area.
